by Robert C. Bjorklund

Robert C. Bjorklund’s profiles of dairy farm families and agricultural leaders of southern Wisconsin record a part of regional history that has been changing dramatically in recent years. Just as tractors replaced horses a few decades ago, new technologies are taking over many of the chores once done by farm families. While many of Bob’s stories tell of milk producers on the farm, others profile co-op members, cheesemakers and farm business leaders as well as university professors, researchers and Extension workers. Bob based these columns on a lifetime of covering the farmers and agricultural developments of southern Wisconsin. The clear language of these stories will appeal to both farmers and non-farmers. Robert C. Bjorklund is known to thousands of readers of the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, where he was farm editor for nearly 40 years. A Wisconsin native, he graduated from Merrill High School, served in Patton’s Third Army in World War II and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he majored in agricultural journalism. Over the years, he covered nearly every farm meeting and agricultural event in southern Wisconsin as well as national farm gatherings from Washington, D.C. to California. An award-winning writer, Bob received the J.S. Russell Memorial Award from the Newspaper Farm Editors of America and the Honorary Recognition Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Bob passed away in 2004. | |
