way into the U.S. Cavalry. While flying as a replacement gunner in a U.S. Air
Corps B-17, Scanlon was shot out of the plane with near-fatal wounds, picked up
and treated by the French Underground and eventually returned alive to England.
Perhaps it was the Luck of the Irish or fate that saved Scanlon from all of war’s
near misses, crashes and wounds. Or, perhaps, he was just destined to live.
