Stories from Germany’s historic Rhine valley, Switzerland’s pastoral cantons, and France’s lovely Alsace all play a part in shaping the lore of America’s most enduring ethnic minority — the Pennsylvania Germans. In Once Upon a Hex, folktale collector Dennis Boyer starts with those roots in Europe and then takes us on a field trip in the American places influenced by the people popularly known as the “Pennsylvania Dutch.” A recognized regional author of Midwest legend and lore, Boyer in this work returns to his Pennsylvania origins. He has written many well received books on topics as diverse as taverns, railroading, and land use. This is his fourth collection of ghost stories. His other Badger Books titles include Gone Missing (2002) and Snow on the Rails (2003). |
Boyer lives with his wife, Donna Weikert, and sons, Sam and Ben, on a farm in southwest Wisconsin. He has been known to engage in draft horse logging, Great Lakes fishing, hiking the Appalachian Trail, and travels among the tribes of the Midwest and Southwest. He is working on a book about folk medicine and healing practices.
“Remarkably broad... in terms of subject matter, but also in the textures and text types, from family story to legends and ghost stories to history, but all with Boyer’s own narrative and literary voice clear.”
