Two enormous armies are poised on the snowy plains of United Dakota poised for mutually assured destruction. One, the Army of North America, is lead by a cabal of fundamentalist tyrants including a reactionary President of the United States. The other, a World Army in two army groups is commanded each by a man and a woman of color, Johnna the Lion of Africa and the very pugnacious Spider Woman. They are guided by a mysterious figure called the Overseer, who is at once the General in Chief of the World Army, a bluegrass musician, and a Buddhist monk who has spent most of his life up to this moment wandering the countryside singing and making mischief. |
The apocalyptic battle to come will settle the issue between ideology and health, doctrine and mystery, religious tyranny and spiritual freedom once and for all. Unknown to both armies there exists a secret weapon which the Overseer will employ at the last minute. What he accomplishes with this weapon is a comedy fatal to the pretentions of all fanaticsm.
The Party is Steven Fortney¹s fifth novel, all of which have been published by Waubesa Press. He lives with his wife, a dozen tomato plants, a yard, and several fish in Stoughton, Wisconsin. His friend and neighbor Richard Fendrick is the cover artist.
Though The Party is the concluding novel of The Passing of Shadows trilogy, as do the three precedent books, this one also stands alone.
